Welcome to Managua, the vibrant capital of Nicaragua! This city, located in the heart of the country, offers visitors a unique experience that fuses Nicaragua's rich history with the vitality of modern life. From its bustling Roberto Huembes Market, where the colors and flavors of local culture unfold before you, to the imposing Lake Xolotlán that adorns the horizon, Managua captivates with its diversity. If you come to the city 24 hours a day, we are sure that this guide will help you organize your day and decide what to do in Managua.
8:00 AM – Start your day trying local flavors
Without a doubt there are many restaurants that serve traditional Nicaraguan food in the capital, on this occasion we are going to recommend ¨La Cocina de Doña Haydee¨ located on the road to Masaya, founded in 1996, a place full of tradition and flavor, in a colonial-style atmosphere. Without a doubt, every time a family member comes from abroad, we go to eat there. Whatever you order, make sure it includes ¨Gallo Pinto¨ a delicious mix between rice and beans that accompanies the breakfasts of all Nicaraguans. Another excellent dish recommendation would be the ¨Nacatamal¨ a corn dough, boiled in banana leaves, with chicken or pork inside.

Continue your course at the ¨Roberto Huembes Market¨. Here, travelers can immerse themselves in the authenticity of Nicaraguan life, exploring stalls filled with local products, from fresh fruits and aromatic spices to handmade crafts and traditional sweets. The market is a reflection of the country's rich heritage, where locals and tourists mingle in a cultural dance, sharing laughter, stories and discovering the very essence of Nicaragua. It is an ideal place to look for souvenirs from the country and learn about part of our culture.
12:00 PM – Explore historic Managua
Go to visit the ¨Laguna de Tiscapa¨ viewpoint and walk for a while enjoying the impressive panoramic view of the city. This place has great historical significance, witness to key events during the Sandinista Revolution, at the top, there is a monument that pays tribute to this past.
After enjoying the view, move to the ¨ Parque Central de Managua¨ to witness the rich history of the city in person. You will be able to appreciate the ¨Old Managua Cathedral¨, with impressive architecture, currently in ruins due to earthquakes that the city has suffered. You can also enter the ¨National Palace of Culture¨ to learn a little about our pre-Columbian art and samples in the various exhibition rooms. In the same park is the ¨Monument to Rubén Darío¨, Rubén Darío is one of the most iconic artists in the country, considered the greatest representative of literary modernism in the Spanish language. The monument was designed by the Italian architect Mario Favilli, sculpted in white marble, inaugurated in 1933.
03:00 PM – Cool off in Puerto Salvador Allende
After walking for a long time, recharge your energy by having lunch with a view of ¨Lake Xolotlán¨, choose from a wide variety of options in local and international food restaurants, then explore the different stages of the port almost 2km long, where you can find Kart tracks, amusement park, water park, craft shops, Rubén Darío museum and replica of ancient Managua in miniature before the 1972 earthquake. If you are lucky At the dock you can find the availability of the boat to take a short walk on the coast of the lake or visit the ¨Love Island¨ where there are swimming pools, restaurants, small trails and spaces to take wonderful photos.
5:30 PM – Observe the impressive lava of the Masaya Volcano
At sunset, go to the national reserve ¨Volcán Masaya¨, a natural wonder that impresses local and foreign tourists. This volcano offers visitors the opportunity to see a lava lake in an active volcano, something unique that can be seen in few places in the world. The Spanish baptized the place as ¨The Mouth of Hell¨ and placed a cross on top to combat the devil. We recommend that you stop by the Visitor Center to learn about the history of the reserve and drive to the highest point to observe the lava. Access costs U$10 for foreigners and U$5 for nationals at night.
7:30 PM – Dinner a delicious Fritanga
On the way back to Managua, we recommend dining on a ¨Fritanga¨, an essential culinary experience for those visiting Nicaragua. This dish consists of a variety of typical Nicaraguan dishes, from tacos, roast beef, fried banana slices and the one that cannot be missed, a delicious gallo pinto, accompanied by traditional natural drinks such as cocoa, tamarind, barley, among others.
Among the options where you can enjoy this meal on your return to Managua, they would be: El Chante Carretera Masaya and Mi Viejo Ranchito. If you are lucky you can listen to live music from national groups with traditional musical instruments.
