8 Places to do tourism in Managua

Generally when we think of our capital, we don't know what to say when asked about tourism, what to do, where to go. We mention the incredible beaches in the south of the country, the colonial city of Granada or sandboarding in León. However Managua does have some beautiful places, worth recommending, that will give our national and international tourists something to talk about. We compiled a list of places within the city, which you will surely like.

Tiscapa Viewpoint

Or Tiscapa Hill, as it is also called, whose name is due to the lagoon of the same name that can be seen from the viewpoint. It is characterized because it has in its upper part the silhouette of Sandino, the national hero of Nicaragua. The place has an excellent view of the city of Managua, Xolotlán Lake and on the other hand, the Tiscapa Lagoon. It was formerly the Somoza Presidential House and later became a prison for those opposed to the Somoza regime. It can be covered in an hour walking.

Revolution Square

Located in the historic center of the city, from this square you can see the Presidential House, Central Park, the Old Cathedral of Managua and the Palace of Culture. You can get an idea of what Managua was like before the 1972 earthquake. It is a beautiful square full of history and relevant facts about Nicaragua. Nearby there is a varied gastronomic offer.
We also invite you to visit the Monument to Rubén Darío inside the Central Park, it is a statue of enormous cultural importance in the heart of Managua. The white structure, which stands in the center of a water fountain, represents the national poet Rubén Darío in the midst of a heavenly scene of angelic figures on a boat.

Luis Alfonso Velasquez Park

A few steps from the Revolution Square is the largest park in Managua, where families from the capital meet. Ideal for sports or walking, this center has sports areas, children's games, restaurants, mechanical and water games.
The name of the park is due in honor of the child martyr of the revolution, assassinated during a confrontation between guerrillas and the national guard in 1979, his name is kept alive through projects for children.

Salvador Allende Port

Located on the shores of Xolotlán Lake or Managua Lake, it is probably the largest tourist center in Managua, it can take up to 2.5 hours to go through all the stages.

It has a wide variety of places to eat and is an excellent place to spend with the family.

Peace Bell

As part of the initiatives to revive the historic center of the capital, on Avenida Bolivar, there is the Peace Bell, a tribute to peace, reconciliation, faith, hope and trust of the population . This monument consists of a structure almost 20 meters high and inside it has a bronze bell weighing 76 quintals and 1.70 meters high, which rings every half hour.

It also has a viewpoint with access for visitors, where you can enjoy the view of the historic center of the capital and learn about the mechanism of the bell.

Japanese Park

Located in Los Robles area and inaugurated in 2005 as part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Nicaragua. The Japanese park is an urban park, the setting for the development of recreation and leisure activities, a space that favors health, physical and mental well-being. We recommend it to sit down and read a book in the afternoon.

Among its attractions is the "Torii Arch", located in the new main access to the park, which is usually found at the entrance of the Shinto Shrines in Japan, which separates the profane world from the sacred and spiritual world. Also a dry garden, typical in Zen temples and appropriate for meditation.

In these facilities you can find; children's play area, a multipurpose court with synthetic flooring, walking path areas, an exercise area and a central square with designs of Japanese architecture.

National Zoo

Located at Km 16 Carretera a Masaya, it is one of the main tourist attractions of the country.

It contains more than 600 species of national fauna, most of them wild and some domestic, as well as several exotic specimens from faraway places such as Africa and Asia, such as African lions and Bengal tigers.

Some of the animals that can be observed here are of species that are even in danger of extinction. The center also has a butterfly farm and is a wildlife rescue center, where they rehabilitate birds, mammals and reptiles that have been victims of human attacks.
